Be a Child Again at Terra 28th Park

There is a new park at the 28th street at the Fort and it's definitely something adult and child alike has to check out.

Areas at Terra 28th Park were designated for different kinds of play, some of which were popular games from childhoods of yesteryears. Think piko (hopscotch) and patintero. They even provided an area for luksong-baka (rough translation: jump over a cow). There is green grass everywhere (water pumps must be keeping all this greenery fresh day in and out) offering padding for children falling on their knees.

And fall they would (happily, I might add) as they run around the area that simply screams freedom and bliss.

Areas that aren't green with grass have some sort of padding, so again, kids are welcome to keep falling down (or rolling around) because the playground is protected enough.

Terra 28th Park is well-lit at night, so you can even avoid the heat of the sun altogether. And if it rains, a huge Active Fun is just across the park. I think it would even make for a great venue for photoshoots.

If you also walk a block or so away to Bonifacio High Street, you can get to the rest at the new fountain there while enjoying a muffin or two.

Affordable Headphones

Can't quite afford bose ie2 audio headphones yet? That's ok, CDR King offers a variety of headphones that will fit every need you may have.

My husband just recently bought a foldable headphone there for P380. Model HP-002-LA, it works with iPhones and iPods and the bass sound of the headset was really amazing. You wouldn't think you had headphones on, it was like listening from amplifiers!
I think it would make a nice gift for your iPhonographer loved one. Give them the gift of surround sound, hehe.

John's Kitchen in Angeles, Pampanga

At the corner where you see the big sign for Timog Park Homes in Angeles, Pampanga, you will also see a street sign that says, "John's Kitchen, 400 meters".

Unfortunately, we arrived late for my niece's birthday party which was held there so we didn't get to take a picture of the restaurant in daylight. Fortunately, my in-laws saved some of the party food (which they offer as part of their catering menu, not restaurant menu). And they were really good.

I am not into roast beef (or meat) that much but I ate so much of it. I couldn't stop. And the salmon dish was something I also liked, considering I don't like salmon as a general rule. I also loved their mashed potato, even if again, I am not a fan of that! So, yeah, verdict is... I highly recommend the food there.

We were even happily agitated to be sitting beside a table of local celebrities in the persons of Claude Tayag and Raymond (I never get his surname, but he's an artist and biodynamic farmer from Prado Farms, and taught us clay molding in my Waldorf crash course). John's Kitchen is just a year old but it is becoming a favorite haunt for the locals and you need only Google it to read good reviews.

The Hot Air Ballon festival is coming up, and I hope travellers will drop by John's Kitchen for great food. John (the owner and chef) worked in Dubai but his menu is more greatly influenced by his training in Australia.

John's Kitchen is open from Mon - Sun: 17:30 - 23:00 and generally welcomes events/parties till 6 PM (so birthday parties are usually held between 3-6 PM). Like I said, they also cater so keep them in mind for corporate or family functions to be held in Angeles (after all, it's just a kilometer away from Clark).

Support System After Birth

First time pregnant moms usually get overwhelmed with the things they have to prepare and prepare for in time for their delivery. Most of the time, moms get preoccupied with shopping for the initial layette and getting their documents concerning health insurance (Philhealth) and maternity leave/benefits in order. Of course, there's also that pressure of coming up with the money for the delivery and thinking up the perfect name while keeping oneself relaxed and healthy. And yes, some mothers also prepare by attending parenting seminars.

However, a lot of moms or prospective parents still miss one important thing: preparing their support system once the child is out. This can be especially crucial in the event of a very difficult labor or unexpected complications in both mother and child. Personally, I had an easier time post-partum with my first, but my second got me looking for depression rehab treatment centers because the melancholy lasted for months and seemed never to end.

So, as early as the minute you find out you're pregnant, make it a habit to dialogue with your partner to help you feel more able to communicate post-partum blues. Also, ask for help from family, and maybe some friends, for help in the early days, if you won't be hiring a helper to help you out. Just know that you may have many people sharing your home with you and still feel all alone after, especially if you cannot ask help from them. So, yes, ask help from them while you're still pregnant so they can help you recover faster.

Consider it as part of your birth plan.

iPhonography

Hands down, digital slr cameras offer the best quality photos but there is a growing trend called Iphonography that is making artists out of everyone.

Camera phones are handy (because we all can't seem to live without our cellphones now) and if you can spend on the best ones, they also usually come with decent cameras with one-click, few-clicks filters that can turn your ordinary snapshot into something focused, interesting or just downright funny. The iPhone bests most phones because of its simplicity that allows it to be the most user-friendly.

Even professional photographers have taken to shooting hundreds of pictures a day to document their lives and what they see or share with friends what they thought was amazing or weird. Try it, an iPhone (or some other Android phone) is much cheaper than a professional DSLR anyway... a lot less heavy too!

MOA Park By the Bay Revamped

I'm not yet sure if I like how they have 'improved' on MOA Park (that side by the bay which they call SM by the Bay). For one thing, there is less empty space for kids to run around in. They have also removed the two playground installations.

But they have installed more carnival rides (a mini Viking ship, a bus, a bee plane, another plane ride... the bumper cars are an old attraction). All cost P50 per ride. The carousel is still there. And the newest installation is a ferris wheel that invokes the idea of The Eye in London, because it's super high.

Yep... it costs P150 per person, and even babies like Yamee pay full price

each car has its own air-conditioner and is sealed on all sides

at first, I wondered about the wisdom of putting such a ride by the bay, where it could get windy during typhoon season. But each car is solid and you don't even feel yourself going up or down while in the ride

I think the best time to ride that ferris wheel is at sunset, because you really get a great view of the bay and everything in it. I can't imagine seeing the harbor lights at that height at night will make for the steep fare, but if you're up there at 7 PM, you can watch the fireworks show from great seats.

Forget about taking great pictures of the bay from that height either, because the windows of each car is made from a sort of scratched glass material. Each car seats a maximum of 6.

Yes, a trip there just got more expensive.

Crunchy Turon for your Guests

At my sons' party last November, we served crunchy turon (plantains fried in a wrapper and sprinkled with sesame seeds) because we loved it when hubs' cousin brought some the week before at a family gathering. His wife makes it. At P5/piece, it was a healthier and more homey kind of dessert for our guests.

We also ordered cream puffs but I have no pictures to show for it. Suffice it to say, some guests preferred to take those home because they, too, were a hit.

Hubs' cousin's wife could actually land any Chef de Partie Jobs but she prefers to work from home.

Stoybooks and Storytelling Party Package from Adarna

Hong Kong Tips for those Travelling with Babies and Kids

PLANNING YOUR ITINERARY

1. Choose your hotel location with care. Check its proximity to restaurants, groceries and transport stops.

2. Arrange your itinerary by plotting must-visits in the same area. Utilize Google maps for directions and distance/travel time approximations. You might not know it but taxi cabs may be refusing you, not because the drivers do not understand your English but because your destination is too near for them to be bothered.

3. Don’t plan too many things in one day and come up with a flexible IT. Going around with kids will cause delays and you want to really enjoy a place, not just go through it.

4. Don’t schedule a trip to Ocean Park and Disneyland on consecutive days as both amusement parks will require a whole day and lots of walking. Better to also schedule a trip to Ocean Park first, when you’re less tired from all the walking you will be doing in Hong Kong, and so the kids can go home with the last impression of Disneyland.

5. Consider going to free or not-so-expensive attractions in Hong Kong too: Nan Lian Garden, Kowloon Park, Hong Kong Science Museum, etc. (here is a list of parks)

6. Save on ticket purchases by getting them at discounted rates at kiosks near your hotel.

WHAT TO BRING

1. Consider bringing a bigger luggage bag to accommodate all your things and your prospective shopping. If you're leaving your luggage at HKIA or Ngong Pin, they will also charge per bag. If you're going to leave your bag in your hotel, it will at least be just one huge bag they need to watch for you (ours just roped off the bags in the lobby, so one bag was still easier to keep an eye on). Just having one huge bag also allows whatever free hand you have to hold onto your child's.

2. Hotels may provide shampoo and soap but if your skin is sensitive, better to bring your own products.

3. Print destination addresses in English and Chinese, if you can, to make it easier to ask for directions. Once you get to Hong Kong, utilize the free maps you can get from HKIA or your hotel to go around and asking for directions.

4. Hong Kong is generally stroller and wheelchair friendly as there are a lot of special lanes/ramps if you can't take the stairs. However, it may mean having to go the long way for elevators. Bringing a stroller may also mean having to fold/unfold it when going down MTR stairs, buses, etc. Read To Bring or not to bring strollers to Hong Kong.

5. Everyone should wear sunscreen when going out, wherever you are, but especially kids in HK... even during cold months. It's easy to get sunburned there without you noticing.

6. Bring the usual medications your child might need (paracetamol, antihistamine). If you didn't, Watson's generally delivers.

7. For families with diaper-wearing kids, it's up to you to bring diapers to HK or just buy there. However, prices may be higher in HK and there may be sensitivity issues with your child. This also covers formula and baby food and baby soap/wash. But if you don't want to bring any of those, HK has enough groceries to provide what you may need.

8. Bring extra clothes for the kids especially if going to Disneyland and Ocean Park. Plan your visit in these parks because most kids get sick after being out in the heat then entering an air conditioned show/attraction. Pack these extra clothes together with other changing implements so you just have to get one bag when needed. And during the summer (which is also their rainy season), bring foldable umbrellas (but make sure the umbrellas are in your checked luggaged at the airport).

9. If you're bringing baby food, either pre-pack in disposable containers or bring all the things you may require for each feeding (water, extra spoons). Typical noodle houses/restaurants don't really give mineral water for free and may serve food that used preservatives, processed ingredients or msg. Some noodle houses may also serve spoons of questionable cleanliness.

10. Extra batteries for your gadgets or your chargers. The humidity in HK reduces battery life to half (or even 1/3).

11. Loaded cellphones, in case we will need to text each other, and roaming instructions depending on your cell network. P25/sms when you text (people from the Philippines can text you at P1/text lang).

12. Money in HK dollars (so you can immediately pay for Octopus card or Airport Express... half of your intended budget) and US Dollars

13. Water bottle for each person. Buy water in gallons at the grocery or replenish your bottles at your hotel. You can easily buy water from 7-11 but it will naturally be more expensive.

DURING A FLIGHT
1. It helps infants' ears if they're breastfeeding/bottle feeding as the plane takes off and descends. It helps toddlers if they're chewing on something or drinking, or yawning, or you can cover their ears with your hands. If you're flying with a child that has colds, ask your pedia if you can give a decongestant to avoid earache.

2. Depending on your carrier, you might not be offered snacks/meals so bring your own for your kids. You may also want to bring 1-2 toys or books to occupy them during the 2-hour flight. If you can, keep them awake before the flight while at the airport so they'd nap during the flight.

GOING AROUND HONG KONG
1. Main attractions like Ocean Park and Disneyland have nappy-changing areas but not all establishments in the general HK area all offer a changing room or even toilets. So, don't wait till the last minute to change your child's diaper. Don't wait till the last minute to have your kids pee.

2. Consider having your young child wear diapers even during the day since it’s not always easy to find toilets in the city.

3. For babies, a sling is a lifesaver.

4. You may be tempted to get a harness for your child (and with the crowd in HK, it's logical to be scared you will lose your child). Be prepared to be stared at if you will use one. However, if your child can already walk, the harness might just be a hassle as it gets tangled up with other people when your child starts running around. Hold his hand instead or put him in a stroller. You may also consider putting your hotel's calling/business card in their pockets (or a printed ID with your contact info and temporary address in HK).

5. You can breastfeed anywhere, especially if you have a nursing cover. But you may have to go to the classier hotels if you want to pump. And you would need a cooler with ice pack if you're storing your milk. You need to stay in a hotel with your own ref (with a good freezer) if you're storing your milk to bring back home.

6. There's an Octopus card for kids so avail that. Kids 3 years old and below ride free in some buses so research/ask the driver.

7. You will not go hungry in Hong Kong because there are different types of dining available everywhere, all the time (well, until really late at least). However, although the familar fast food chains are to be seen there, they will taste a little (to a lot) different from what we have here. So, just bring enough snacks as emergency stash but there is no need to panic buy kiddie treats.

Weight Gain During the Holidays

Before you go looking for the best weight loss pills or chugging smilling teas, do take in mind that the weight gain didn't happen overnight, so neither should the weight loss. Sure, it may have happened over 12 days (or a month, depends how early you started merrymaking) but it will always be healthier to do it naturally first.

Start with eating more fruits and vegetables, and ridding your body of toxins.

Drink plenty of water.

Stop slouching.

Engage in more activities.

And start reducing the sweets, the salty, the fatty in your diet.

If you did not gain that much to start with, it shouldn't be a problem losing the gained weight. And until then, you can always dress up in ways that create the illusion of a slim silhouette.

If you're still thinking of what to give to your beloved, why not just play to the season's cooler/cold/frigid weather? Consider giving Dan Post Boots, a multitude of scarves (there are some designs that are reversible, and you can just DIY some too by just buying fabric and sewing it into a tube to make infinity scarves), gloves, heavy jackets or coats and extra pairs of socks.

If you're not comfortable giving clothes, think of warming oils, eucalyptus/peppermint essences, scented candles and lip balm.

You can also order gourmet coffee or special cocoa mixes. All these are sure to be appreciated and used this season and may be given with a note that says, "hope this helps keep you warm."

Review: Kitchen Treasures Catering

How do you avoid a mass-produced quality to food at a birthday party without getting the services of the really expensive caterers? Get Kitchen Treasures to cater to you instead!

We loved their food at a baptism we went to and guests loved the food we served them at my sons' party.

Miss Mylene Sediaren was very easy to talk to (although it sometimes takes days before she replies to an e-mail). The staff was a little late setting up (based on the agreed time, not the party). They asked me if they could set up as early as 11 AM for my 3:30 PM party but arrived at the venue at 1:00 PM instead since they were caught in traffic. That was stressful, but the staff humored all my requests and was set up in time for the party. They even offered to chop the lechon and put that on a heated serving dish (no extra charge).

And really, the guests LOVED the food :)

I raved about Dazo Hall back in 2008, when we held my son's first birthday party there. The space and the ventilation is still good to great but I think it's in need of another paint job.

It's not so visible from these pics but the front/stage area was an eyesore with all its little markings. I guess, if metal buildings can rust over time, event halls like Dazo will also show the wear and tear from numerous parties held there.

It was a good idea for us to have a big tarpaulin to cover that area. Future patrons would be well-advised to do the same as well as get their decorator to put huge balloon arrangements and other such stuff in front.

Rental fee is now almost P6,000 (because we also paid for electricity charge for bringing in a sound system, as well as extra hours for setup) with a bond of P3,000 which you can refund a week or two after.

Shop Smarter and More Safely this Christmas

On my way to Divisoria last week, a man sat beside me in the jeep egging the driver to go faster. It turned out, he was trying to get away from the man he snatched a cellphone from.

Cases like this are rampant during the Holidays as even the poor and the sinful are intent to give themselves a Merry Christmas. I know, it's not like people will be shopping with gold bars
in bag, but here are some tips for everyone to shop smarter and more safely:

1) Have a separate coin purse for the transport fares so people don't see the thousand peso bills in your wallet.

2) Don't keep all your eggs in one basket, in case you lose a wallet or someone picks your pocket.

3) Leave valuables behind when going into crowded places.

4) If you can, go on leave on a weekday to do and finish all your shopping. Less people about so even the lines at the cashier will be shorter too.

5) Use your debit/credit card instead, if you're not going to flea markets, bazaars, etc so you don't need to carry cash.

6) Try to shop early, when attendants are still alert and fresh. Shopping in the evening when all store clerks are already exhausted may result in wrong change, left purchases and poorer customer service.

7) Think of a theme so you need only go to one or two places for all your gift-giving needs.

8) Don't shop alone, so that someone will always have your back. Or...

9) Divide and conquer with a friend/partner, so that someone else can already get other things in your list.

10) Keep a watchful eye and err on the side of caution.

Continue Looking Good During the Holidays

Some people, in other parts of the world, will have Thanksgiving as a holiday before Christmas. For us here in the Philippines, it will just be a series of Christmas-y merrymaking along with school reunions and year-end parties.

With merrymaking always comes exhaustion, what with the late hours, stress, the sinful stuff you ingest and maybe even the smoke you're exposed to. How do you continue looking good then?

If you can't stick to healthy fare at parties, at least eat healthy when you're not at a party. Immensely enjoying a buffet need not be so bad if you've been subsisting on light salads, high grain fiber, and fruits.

Drink your Vitamin C and E to give you that glow. Use a lot of moisturizers too.

Exfoliate at least twice a week. Use deadsea salt or a homemade concoction of honey, water and sugar.

Drink plenty of water, expecially if you've had a drink, or had coffee or tea.

Get plenty of rest. Nap before having your lunch. Some 15 minutes of zzz's will do your looks, as well as mental health, good.

Bring extra clothes at the office or in the car for wardrobe changes or unwanted wardrobe malfunction moments. Invoke different effects through accessories or invest in multiwear clothing that can take you from work to a party.

Always have baby wipes to clean and spruce yourself up... and a handy makeup kit for touch ups.

Lastly, smile. The Holidays is for merrymaking after all.

Send a Sense of Home to Family Abroad

Christmas, they say, is the happiest time of the year in the Philippines. We even start on it early since Christmas decorations go up in malls on the first day of September.

It's also the season that loved ones living abroad miss the most. Some even make it a point that they spend Christmas here every year because Christmas in other countries just really do not compare.

Now, if you're like me who has relatives going abroad in time to spend Christmas there instead, how about remembering to send Christmas care packages?

Send true-blue cacao balls (tablea) for them to turn into hot cocoa, or sotanghon noodles for that Noche Buena soup. Send a Christmas lantern, even the cheap ones, and send Nativity scenes. You can also include recorded messages or pictures of old Christmases stored in memory cards as digital files.

Send dried fish too, if you want. I'm not sure how long puto bungbong lasts but suman (sticky rice) will hold well in long-haul flights. Just send something your family associates with Christmas. I am sure they will appreciate it.

Gift Ideas for Births, Baptisms and Birthdays

Say, you have been invited to a christening or birthday party, or a baby shower perhaps, what would be a great gift idea?

Forget the usual feeding bottles and onesie sets being pushed in department stores. Mothers nowadays are more particular about their feeding options and few want their precious ones dressed like all the rest of babies out there.

For baby showers, here's a really helpful starter list:
~ digital baby monitors
~ newborn and sized-small diapers (Prokids, Drypers and EQ Dry)
~ tubs and tubs of wipes (unscented)
~ hypoallergenic skin cleanser/soap like Oilatum, Cetaphil, Physiogel, Aveeno or Mustela
~ CD of lullabies and soft music (or even Mozart)

For baptisms and birthdays, feel free to give:
~ toy chests, both wooden or plastic ones
~ book shelves
~ books
~ wooden blocks and other such toys

Convertible Clothes for this Party Season

The last three months of the year is when there are more births (so, more birthday parties), more weddings (especially around December), more events (Halloween, Thanksgiving) and parties (Christmas parties and reunions).

What to wear to each one, then, without breaking your budget and going into debt? After all, heaven forbid that you wear the same outfit to each party. You may not upload your pictures on FB but your friends might still tag you, and your other friends will notice that you seem to be wearing the same outfit in each one.

One really good answer to this fashion issue is to invest in convertible clothes (also referred to as infinity dresses or multiway tops). Eden's Infinitude is a good example of something you can use to accessorize basic pieces with to achieve different looks. ForMe also has a multiway top. You may also look into owning a Bina scarf, a Pirose scarf or some Vanessa Knox dresses.

Even hearty eaters can just shop for a cheap plus size cocktail dress and embellish it with different scarves or multiway shawls for different occasions. You can employ color blocking strategies with your accessories and also repurpose old stuff that you may have. Turn old sweaters into scarves and old shirts into cute jumpers. Youtube is replete with tutorials and there are a lot of crafty bloggers who can give you step-by-step instructions on how to make a multiway dress.

Feel free to also borrow accessories to spice up your wardrobe with.

So, don't be disheartened with the coming party season. Embrace it and look fabulous till the end of time (because convertible clothes cannot really go out of fashion!).

Play Pilipinas - The First Ever Play Festival in the Country

Advocating play in this time of structured socialization in the young, handy electronics and city living, Play Pilipinas has combined forces with the international community to bring to Filipinos the first ever Play Festival to be held in the country.

Happening at the SMX Convention Center (Mall of Asia, Roxas Boulevard, Manila) on October 21-23, 2011, the festival will be composed of three parts:

1) FORUM
~ For P10,500, educators, school owners, play advocates and homeschoolers can attend the 3-day conference and learn from esteemed local (e.g. Dr. Honey Carandang, Dr. Maria Teresa Gustilo-Villasor, etc) and international (Marcus Veerman, Anita Bundy, etc) speakers who are experts in the different aspects involving and affecting play. The conference fee includes a DVD on children's play, an exclusive magazine, the conference kit and snacks.

~ For P1,000, mini-workshops are available to educators and intentional parents who want to acquire certain skills or knowledge on various aspects of play. Examples of topics to be covered are Keeping Playtime Safe (by Toni Tiu of wifelysteps.com), Ideas for Outdoor Play and Integrating Play in the Curriculum.

Eggette: Hong Kong Street Food

One real advantage of staying in Hong Kong hotels and hostels is that you really need not rent an apartment with a stainless steel sink, ovens, and all the pots and pans you'd need plus a dining area... because, well, you need not cook. Even just buying off the streets is cheap.

Take for instance this Hong Kong street food staple, the eggette. It's really a lot like pancakes and waffles (except for the hint of coconut) but it looks a little more inviting because it looks different. And for HKD10, it's a cheap, healthy snack you can bring with you as you roam the shopping district that is Granville.

Two places I know for sure where you can find a stall is at Granville Road (at the corner of Shun Yee street). Another one is just past the camera shops along Cameron Road.

To Bring or Not to Bring Strollers to Hong Kong

Hong Kong is generally stroller and wheelchair friendly as there are a lot of special lanes/ramps in a lot of the major tourist attractions and shopping complex if you can't take the stairs. However, it may mean having to go the long way for elevators or these ramps. Bringing a stroller may also mean having to fold/unfold it when going down MTR stairs, buses, etc.

So, to the question of whether to bring a stroller or not with you for your trip to Hong Kong, here are the things you must consider:

1) How old is the child?
Personally, I think an infant will be better off being worn in a carrier or sling or pouch. This way, you don't have to remove them from the stroller when necessary.

For toddlers up to 3-4 years old, strollers may be the best way for you not to lose them in a crowd. Plus, they will still really complain about long MTR walks (where everyone is in a hurry and all you see are people and exits). They don't mind the walk so much if you're not in a hurry and they can stop to check things out along Hong Kong streets.

2) Who will be in charge of the stroller?
Will you have a designated driver for this one? Who will it be and will he be amenable to keep folding and unfolding it when you ride buses, or to carry it down MTR stairs or Ocean Park steps if you cannot be bothered to look for the elevators and special ramps?

Ocean Park has a lot of ascending or descending terrain

3) Where will you be going and how do you plan on getting there?
If you don't intend for the kids to tag along when you brave shopping districts, and would only really need them at amusement parks, then just rent at amusement parks.

If you're going to so many places in a day, and boarding the bus many times, a stroller may prove to be a hassle since you have to fold/unfold it and stow it away properly. You may also have to worry about where to park such things in the general Hong Kong area. Plus, since you're likely to also put your things in there, you may inadvertently leave a valuable behind when you're parking it aside for a show.

But if you're say, staying in the Nathan, Kimberley, Cameron, Granville area and intend to just shop there, and keep utilizing the MTR, then a stroller will help in keeping the "Are we there yet?" and "I don't want to walk anymore." moments to a minimum.

4) What is the purpose of your HK trip?
If you're after visiting as many sights as possible, then you'd probably be in a hurry to get places and a stroller will slow you down. But if it's a leisurely trip with the purpose of delighting the kids you are with, then a stroller would serve you well as you visit parks too.

5) What kind of stroller do you have/plan on bringing?
If you're like us who own a heavy duty one with shocks and a really sturdy body, it just may be impractical and just more work to bring it along.

If you own a lighter model (most umbrollers are) or can borrow one, then taking the stroller up and down some areas may be easy as pie.

* Other notes/tips:
~ you have to carry strollers up and down MTR stairs but there are elevators within the MTR station and spaces inside MTR cars for strollers and wheelchairs

~ Hubs felt we'd have felt bad about a new one getting roughed like ATV Tires at Ocean Park and fully appreciated their heavy-duty rentals.

~ even 6-year olds will benefit from a stroller at Ocean park becase it's really a huge area to cover on foot. However, a stroller may not be maximized as much at Disneyland since the attractions are closer together so the child will be more likely exploring on foot.

~ for those willing to push and carry (up and down steps), a stroller will also accommodate your backpack and shopping as well as provide a place to nap for your tired toddlers/kids

~ there are designated parking spaces for strollers at Disneyland and Ocean Park, just be careful not to leave any valuables (or the umbrella) behind

~ Strollers/wheelchairs may be rented at Hong Kong Disneyland (HKD60/day with HKD100 deposit; HKD200 deposit if weather forecast suggested rain to cover the stroller rain gear) and Ocean Park (HKD40/day with HKD60 deposit). You get the deposit back upon returning the strollers and you get to keep the name card (a sort of ID attached to the stroller, with your child's name written on it) as a souvenir.

~ Strollers aren't allowed inside the Ocean Park cable car but there are special lanes and allocated area for people travelling with kids/strollers inside the Ocean Express (tram).

Kids can remain in strollers inside the Ocean Express and watch the show from the ceiling screens from there.

Ultimately, it is still your call whether to bring your own stroller or just rent from there. People used to be able to rent strollers from YWCA-HK too but nobody responded to my e-mail. You can also shop for umbrollers there for as cheap as HKD250 and dispose of it later if you really don't want to actually bring a stroller and check it at the airport.

Christmas Shopping, Christmas Savings

September usually heralds Christmas season in our country and shops everywhere start enticing us with Christmas music while putting goodies on sale and displaying new inventories.

But wait. Make sure first that the things are really on sale. And do you really need it, want it, or would you really use it?

Audit your family's wardrobe first. Maybe there are enough hidden treasure in your closet to make you buy just one or two extra shirts for your boys, rather than five. Check the toys first. Check your appliances too. Take stock of what you have, what needs to be thrown away, what may be donated (or put on garage sale, or sold on Ebay) so you'll have a better grasp of what you already have.

Plus, spring cleaning at this point may make you realize what gifts you received that were cute, but also proved totally useless for you (maybe because it was too cute?). Let that guide you in your Christmas shopping for friends and relatives.

Take advantage of groupon deals (but check first if they're real deals) and Ebay or bazaar finds and slowly build on your Santa Claus sack... choose to give a small token instead to those you know can afford their own stuff. Consider baked goodies instead of lavishing other families with gifts. Consider, too, making your own newsletters or digital greeting cards instead of sending out tons that will only gather dust (and waste paper and ink).

Then, all the savings can go to tuning up your car, making repairs at home or finally making that big purchase for a family treat (think plasma tvs or an ice cream maker).

The cost of goods and our way of life has been constantly rising so we really have to be creative now in our gift-giving. Maximize your money and really have a Merry Christmas.

Ocean Park - Hong Kong

Our caravan decided to go to Ocean Park first before going to Disneyland because we wanted to:
1) Tackle Ocean Park and its vast area when we're still fresh, and
2) Let the kids go home with the impression of their favorite Disney characters

Ocean Park is a park more for adults and teens, not for little kids. However, there is Whiskers Harbour that's for little ones, full of kiddie rides, a playground and a talking tree. You can easily just spend your whole day there.

The highlights of going to Ocean Park includes:
1) The many adult attractions concentrated on The Summit starting with a ride on the cable car. I don't recommend going on the ferris wheel though because there is no Fast Pass option at Ocean Park and the line there tends to be long, and that big wheel will just spin around once for you. For the same effort, just go on the Ocean Park Tower for the view.

2) Must-rides are the Abyss and the Flash, if you're thrill seekers. However, they only accept 12 year olds and above at the Flash plus, many don't really make the effort to go where this ride is because it requires people to go further up. Enjoy relatively shorter lines for these rides too.

The Flying Swing is also very popular and there is another roller coaster being built in the park.

3) It can be quite educational because of the aquariums, pandas, seal/dolphin show.

4) Tickets cost cheaper than Hong Kong Disneyland at HKD280 (adults) and HKD140 (child). Tickets are even cheaper if you get them at China Travel Service or via travel agencies and hotels since they generally get discounts. Plus, Ocean Park is not strict about bringing in food so you can freely bring all the beverage and food you want. Don't be surprised to see some people using shaded places as picnic grounds.

5) Even rental of strollers and wheelchairs is cheaper at HKD40 for the whole day (plus HKD60 deposit). The strollers are a little weird though, made of heavy-duty plastic that can accommodate kids 1 year old and above.

It can also be a pain having to bring these babies up and down some stairs (without the child in it, obviously) but has plenty of storage space for your bags.

6) Lots of trees and mist fans around. Since we went at the height of summer, it was really pretty hot and our mini fans all conked out on us. But it was still generally tolerable because there's still a lot of shaded areas. One really cool area is that roofed part before you go down to the Ocean Theater and there are tables and benches there too so you can easily camp there.

7) Lots of refreshment vendors. Bottled water costs HKD20 and sodas/juice sells for HKD22. Ice cones also cost HKD22. No drinking fountains anywhere though.

I believe roasted corn also cost HKD22 (we bought at the Rainforest Snacks kiosk) and that's really unremarkable so buy the turkey something instead there (because that was really delicious).

8) Get to ride a hot air balloon! Of course, you have to tediously wait your turn.

9) I loved that there were a lot of toilets and changing stations... they're gender sensitive/equal opportunity too.

10) Prepare to be exhausted, not just by the heat (in summer time) but by the amount of walking you have to do. And here, strollers are a must for kids 5 years old and below because you really have to cover a lot of area if you are to see all the attractions the park has to offer. Bring fans, extra clothes, wipes. Plan your visit and know where the shaded/rest areas are. Prepare to walk uphill, downhill and up and down stairs.

One last thing... strollers are not allowed in the cable cars so either ride the Ocean Express going up and down, or do what we did: ride the cable cars at night (just before closing) going up and then immediately go down again via Ocean Express.

Guests can easily go to Ocean Park by going to the Citybus' Ocean Park Express (Route 629) station just outside Admiralty MTR station (Exit B). The bus fares are HK$10.6 for adults and HK$5.3 for children (aged 4-11).

I just have to say I was disappointed by The Grand Aquarium. I guess it is a bigger aquarium but I preferred the old one (now the Sturgeon Aquarium). I also failed to watch the fountain and lights show that caps the Ocean Park experience. Maybe when we return.

And yes, i'd love to experience Ocean Park when it's real cold and foggy up there.

Please note that we travelled as a caravan of 8 adults, 3 preschoolers and 1 infant and were in Hong Kong between August 22-27, 2011, the height of summer (and summer sale) there.

Full Restaurant - Hong Kong

We had the misfortune to eat at Full Restaurant for dinner the first night we were in Hong Kong. We thought it was your typical Chinese Noodle house but it turned out it was more Chinese-Vietnamese and not really your usual noodle house.

All in all, the food was so-so to good. The staff absolutely didn't know any English so we really just pointed on the Chinese-English menu what we wanted... and still, there were some wrong orders served us which we did not challenge anymore due to the language barrier.

Cleanliness was also an issue. Our group used chopsticks to eat even though we were given spoons and forks because those just looked too dirty to put in your mouth. What's more, the spoons/forks were put in a plastic glass filled with what seems to be tea so, throughout the duration of our stay in Hong Kong, we were not sure if the probably-tea in plastic glasses that were being served us were meant to be drunk, or to sterilize utensils in. Hehe.

For what it's worth, the servings are huge... but I am sorry to say that the best thing about this place is that it's so near Crumbs Frozen Yogurt Station because it's also located at Granville Rd/Shun Yee Street. And shopping is just around the corner from this place.

I really suggest you steer clear :)

Summit Delicious Noodle House: Open 24 Hours in Hong Kong

One way to save on food costs in Hong Kong is to bring your own instant noodles and crackers (even water, if you don't have much luggage) and just eat these in your hotel/hostel.

Another is to subsist on bread from any of the ">bake shops in the city. A flossed bread or chicken/hotdog sandwich will just set you back HKD12.

Yet another, and the more common route taken by travellers to Hong Kong, is to make noodle houses your home away from home. You can almost never go wrong with your orders.

I love shrimp wonton noodle soup and absolutely LOVE it made the Chinese way: with whole shrimp (sans head and shell, of course) and chopped fungus inside a dimsum wrapper. And we just love eating at Summit Delicious, located at Hart Avenue, just off Cameron/Carnarvon Road.

Fancy a Dessert? Five Generations in Hong Kong Serves Them Real Fancy

We were itching for real desserts (I wanted cake) and it was a great time to spoil ourselves (we were almost at the end of our Hong Kong trip with kids, and just survived Disneyland). Hubby has mentioned finding Five Generations, a dessert place just across our favorite food-on-a-stick place (Wah Kee), and since we had our late dinner at Summit Delicious (same area), it was a no-brainer that we'd end up there.

Those going there with kids might be a little turned off by the smokers hanging outside at night. It's really a small place and if you ask them, they would even tell you they don't have any English name :) It's a good thing this sign is pasted on its window:

it's really cramped inside, it can maybe fit a maximum of only 30 diners

because we were a big group, we decided to order different things (forgot the names of the desserts though)

we don't recommend whatever this is, both hubs and my SIL (who ordered it) didn't like it

this, on the other hand, was as gratifying as how it looked

snow storms are flavored and shaved ice best eaten with the stuff surrounding it

both chocolate (previous) and coffee (above) snow storm desserts are served with nata de coco, mini marshmallows, chocolate-flavored crisped rice and chocolate chips

we were told that this chocolate pudding was what won them the BEST DESSERT (so yeah, communicating in English may be a challenge); this is much like a chocolate souffle that collapses into a hot, gooey, chocolatey madness, best eaten with its other components (there's some light syrup with the strawberry, plus the choice of ice cream flavor) for optimum decadence

All in all, we did feel spoiled with the experience. The snow storms average HKD38 and I believe the chocolate pudding cost HKD45. And although I think there are a lot of restaurants in Manila that can match or beat them, we'd still go back to try the other things they have on the menu... like the award-winning egg pudding.

It's easier to find the cafe if you look for the corner where Prat Avenue(Wah Kee Snacks) meets Hart Avenue (Five Generations), just off Carnarvon/Hanoi Road. If you check Google Maps (satellite pics), however, you'd see a boutique right where the cafe should be, so better believe me instead for we were there!

Wah Kee Snacks / Restaurant - Hong Kong

Just off Carnarvon Road in Kowloon, at the corner of Prat Avenue is this wonderful restaurant (although I didn't notice an area where people can dine in... then again, maybe because I was distracted by the food) called Wah Kee Restaurant (if you Google it, it used to be Wah Kee Snacks).

The restaurant sells a lot of stuff that's barbecued or fried. Things like pig kidneys and ox tripe skewered in barbecue sticks. But we were enslaved by this already:

at HKD9/stick, you get yummy sausages wrapped in wonderful bacon... and the accompanying (peanut) sauce is great with rice too!

Hong Kong Disneyland

Going to Hong Kong Disneyland is easy because you can employ the services of MTR, bus, taxis and ferry (coming soon!). Still, the easiest way to get there is via the MTR Disneyland Resort Line.

It's about five minutes walk from the Disney train to the main gate (where you can purchase tickets, if you haven't already).

Better to study the map first and check the time of the shows/ parades so you can plan your day. A lot of Disney characters will be available for photo opps at different parts of the park.

Lines at the Philharmagic show and It's A Small World (two must-see attractions) are manageable. Mickey's Philharmagic Show is a must-see because your little ones will get a feel of riding a roller coaster (or a flying carpet) without the danger, and you will get to relive all the magical moments of the Disney movies you love/grew with.

It's A Small World is nice because of all the dolls/puppets you'll see while on a boat (good for 8-12 people).

Lines at the Pooh ride and the Disney train tend to be really long, as well as the Space Mountain ride.

Another nice show to catch is Festival of the Lion King at Tomorrowland.

You can sneak in some snacks (they sequestered my SIL's McDonalds burger but not the breads they had in another bag nor the biscuits/crackers we had) and just avail of Disneyland's 3-in-1 Meal Offering (regular price: HKD150; special coupon price: HKD125) that entitles you to:
1 Lunch^ ( enjoy before 4:00pm on your visit date)
1 Dinner^ (enjoy after 5:30pm until fireworks start on your visit date)
1 Drink or Popcorn
* Lunch & Dinner Coupons do not include drinks
** meals can only be gotten from specific restaurants (Starliner Diner, Comet Cafe, Clopins Festival of Foods)
*** the popcorn was really good!

Told you, portions were big... but I didn't hear any "delicious!" comments from our table... and I really didn't like what I ate (the pork ham dish). It wasn't bad, just also not good either. Bland and oily, mostly. The fried chicken was okay.

If you're not getting the 3-in-1 Meal Offering, prepare to shell out between HKD60-100 per meal at any of the restaurants. Water cost HKD20 while softdrinks cost HKD22.

I would suggest to get a heavy breakfast/brunch before going to Disneyland and to just snack there all day, then have a delicious dinner somewhere else after.

There is a water fountain/refilling station just outside Royal Banquet Hall (Fantasyland) and Tahitian Terrace (Adventureland) and maybe others more in places near rest rooms so feel free to just refill your water bottles.

The food is somewhere between so-so and good but the servings are huge. I would also recommend not to order separate meals for little ones unless necessary since they are also not likely to eat that much from all the excitement.

Rental of strollers for a day costs HKD60 with a HKD100 bond for stroller (and if thunderstorms were predicted for the day, another HKD100 deposit for the stroller rain coat). Just proceed to City Hall to rent either wheelchair or stroller. And yes, the rain protector will come in handy when it rains because it will really keep your child dry inside the stroller.

Their strollers can accommodate babies that can already sit up to toddlers up to 15 kgs. in weight.

Strollers will also come in handy when you're saving a space along Main Street for the Flights of Fantasy Parade because you can park it sideways and have your kiddos sit at the curb. The strollers will protect your kids from other people who may end up pushing for a better look at the Disney characters.

The finale of the experience is the fireworks show happening after Tinkerbell scatters magic dust on Sleeping Beauty's castle. Make sure to find a good spot already around 8 PM. Tinkerbell scatters the magic dust at 8:30 PM and the fireworks show start at 9:00 PM.

Lastly, Disneyland seemed like a hotter place (during the day) than Ocean Park (maybe because it's flatter and had less trees) but it's also a lot smaller (think Enchanted Kingdom size) so walking around isn't that hard (compared to Ocean Park).

Cardio Boys - A Fresh Form of Entertainment

Madame Tussauds Hong Kong

If you've never been to a wax museum, then Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong is the perfect, more readily attainable first experience for you. And though I do not know around a third of the figures there (Chinese/Hong Kong/India celebrities), it was still just great fun to pose with them and let loose.

Madame Tussauds is located inside the Peak Tower and operates from 9:45am – 10pm daily (last admission: 9:45pm). Some of the more famous figures you can pose with there include:

I don't have time to crop pictures of our crazy poses (plus, I don't want to spoil the fun for you) but we really had a great time at Madame Tussauds. I'm not sure if it helped that we were there between 7 pm - 9 pm.

Of course, you have to wait your turn with some of the figures but there are plenty of them to amuse you while you're waiting. We also sampled the SCREAM attraction, a horror chamber, where groups of 8 people walk through an 'asylum.'

For those going in with kids (like we did), you may have to prepare the easy-to-scare ones. We told our niece that the figures were made from candle (because wax isn't something she totally gets) and painted/dressed to look like people. However, even Lady Gaga could not convince her to come near.

And if a child says he/she is scared, respect the feeling and don't go pushing/forcing them to like/pose with the figures. It might just further traumatize them and they wouldn't trust the world to respect their feelings if their own parents/significant others did not listen to what they were saying. Maybe you can have them photograph you instead :)

Going to and off the Peak - Hong Kong

The Peak in Hong Kong is home to Hong Kong's wealthiest and offers great viewing, shopping and dining possibilities to tourists.

Unless you plan on driving or walking, there are two easy and affordable ways to go to the Peak. The first is through the really popular Peak Tram, the first cable funicular in Asia.

From Central Bus Terminus (near Star Ferry), board Bus No. 15C to go to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus. Pay only HKD4.20.

Be prepared for really long lines though. Those purchasing combo tickets (round-trip Peak Tram fares and tickets to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum and Sky Terrace) may enjoy a shorter queue but you would still end up with all the others waiting for the tram.

Our group got there at past 6 AM and it took us an hour at least before we got to ride a tram. Unfortunately, we also had to endure the heat and some pushing from the other visitors. There was no special lane for those with kids but a group of travelling senior citizens were given special treatment and were not required to fall in line. Unfortunately again, in all the rush to board the tram, one of them yanked on my niece's arm which scared my niece enough to cry, which upset my SIL and BIL enough to shout at them, "hey, there are kids here!"

Both my husband and another BIL had to secure our kids from the others who were pushing to go in, so we weren't really in the mood to enjoy the tram ride up. Plus, since it was dark already, we only got to appreciate the city lights when we were already really way up high to see them.

After our fun time at Madame Tussauds and upon seeing the long line at the tram station to go down, we decided to just board the bus to Central.

Bus No. 15 gets you all the way from Central (pier 5) to the Peak and back again for HKD9.80. However, it is not a bus ride for the faint of stomach. One of those riding the bus with us had to get off to barf, which made us all feel thankful we hadn't eaten anything yet. Bus drivers in Hong Kong know their roads and tackles these at breakneck speeds, even if said roads are going downhill and zigzagged.

The Peak tram operates from 7:00 AM to 12:00 MN while most of the attractions in the Peak Tower open at 10:00 AM.

Last trip for Bus. No. 15 from the Peak is at 1:00 AM.

I first fell in love with Hong Kong Science Museum six years ago, when I spent the better part of a day just exploring its many exhibits and marvelling at the expense that went into those to make Science fun for all. So, I vowed to return with my son.

We chose to go on a Wednesday because the museum lets everyone in for free on those days. I forgot, however, that it's summer season for the kids from Hong Kong and visitors from China so the museum was packed.

The down side of going on a Wednesday is that you cannot go around the exhibit halls leisurely since you'd have to fall in line for some attractions. But attractions, they still were.

We did not get to explore all we want because of the crowd but I still highly recommend the museum for school-age kids because it can really make learning more fun. The usual ticket price is HKD25.

Crumbs Frozen Yogurt Station - Hong Kong

As we were exploring around Nathan Road, looking for a place to have dinner in, we were enticed by a man to sample a free tasting of Crumbs frozen yogurt. Suffice it to say that the free taste did its job because every day would find one of us buying a cup.

1 'jar' with one topping of choice, starts at HKD28 (around P152.00 or US$3.60)

if you're lucky (and shameless), you can get by with the free sample because it's already substantial

Crumbs has many branches in Hong Kong but the nearest to Hotel Benito in Cameron Road is the one at Granville Rd/Shun Yee Street (about 3 minutes away).

Enjoy flavors like Green Tea Mochi and crumbs that run the gamut of fruits (mangoes, starwberries) to crackers (digestives and Oreo chunks) and sweets (Maltesers, gummy bears, candy sprinkles). I know, certainly something to direct a normal adult searching for the top 10 diet pills but Crumbs frozen yogurt is just soooo worth it.

Maybe it will help if you just concentrate on the yogurt = probiotics part. :)

Hoixe Cake Shop - Hong Kong

One of the real perks of staying at Hotel Benito in Hong Kong was having a Hoixe Cake Shop nearby. Google it, however, and you won't find a listing of the cake shop along Cameron Road but there is one and we were patrons the whole week we were in Hong Kong. Their bread (pork floss bread and shrimp sandwich) was both breakfast, snack and packed lunch (for Ocean Park and Disneyland days).

It's like Bread Talk but also reminiscent of Carlo's Bakery/Cake Boss for me.

by Hong Kong standards, bread sold here are generally affordable

as you can see, there are many Hoixe branches in Hong Kong

and the cakes are really not bad (they have a lot of desserts with fruits on it that were very pleasing to the eyes, but I really don't like fruit on my bread and we didn't really have a down time to warrant sharing a whole cake in)

I swear by Hoixe Cake Shop's pork floss... Bread Talk's pales in comparison.

Hotel Benito - Hong Kong

Hotel Benito was indeed a lucky find for us as we were planning our Hong Kong trip. At first, we were considering the hostels in Chungking and/or Mirador Mansions but I was iffy about those since we will be travelling with kids. We knew we would be out all day and only needed a safe place to stash our stuff in and sleep in at night but I still wanted some place nice.

We chose to ride the Airport Express (for the experience, as most in our group were HK first-timers) and were shuttled by bus (for free) from the Kowloon station to Park Hotel (Chatham Road corner Cameron Road, because the driver knew where this was). We easily saw Hotel Benito's building and just walked to it (around 3 minutes, with luggage and kids in tow).

Hotel Benito's entrance is at the side street going to Cameron Lane (not facing Cameron Road). Other landmarks that will tell you you're near the place are Watson's, Aji Ichiban and Body Shop as well as KFC, Burger King and Yoshinoya signs. It's a one-minute walk to the MTR B2 exit.

the very clean (someone kept on cleaning all the glass, which our kids kept on kissing and touching) and simple lobby/reception area, with 2 elevators to the right servicing the building

standard twin room (which we got for HKD800/room/night [around P4,340/night] for the first 3 weeknights and HKD950 for our last night, which fell on Thurs-Fri; if we stayed another night, the weekend rate would have been HKD1500/room)

the twin beds can be moved together to form a bigger bed (which accommodated my family of 2 adults, 1 preschooler and 1 infant well enough), and there is ample cabinet space to stow your things in

really clean comfort rooms with a separate shower area (no tubs though); two bath and two hand towels were provided and changed daily

the separate shower area; hot water isn't a problem; shampoo and liquid soap dispensers inside (and they smelled nice enough and felt minty)

toilettries provided include toothbrush/toothpaste, razor, comb and cotton buds/balls and are replenished as used

The air-conditioning in our room was working fine. We were also provided with two bottles of water daily; an orange and apple upon arrival; and packets of coffee, milk tea and jasmine tea (electric kettle provided).

There seemed to be only 20 TV channels or so, most of which were Chinese. There was Nick Jr. so my son was happy enough. We did not bring a laptop so we weren't able to test the internet cable but our relatives in other rooms surfed and Facebooked just fine.

There was also a mini ref where we kept our drinks cold (even froze beverages for next-day outings).

The staff were really unobtrusive but quite helpful. The concierge would readily whip out a map to draw on to better direct you to where you want to go (and they spoke and understood English). They also allowed us to leave our bags in their care so we can wander around Hong Kong already before the check-in time of 2:00 PM and allowed us to leave the bags there for last-minute shopping after check-out (12:00 NN).

I also appreciated the care that went into cleaning our room. Our first night there, we pushed the beds together but without care and found it the next day (after coming home from Ocean Park) pushed together by the window, with some of our clothes that were left on the bed piled neatly on the backrest of a chair. Our scattered belongings on the dresser table often got some semblance of order too, even the nebulizer we brought will be stood upright under the dresser, ready for next use.

One other thing was the lack of noise in that area. We'd hear the occasional siren of a police car/ambulance maybe but it really wasn't noisy there, and we stayed at the 3rd floor only. If I would have a point of contention, it might be waking up to a big face (a well-lit ad from across the road) but our curtains were always drawn, anyway.

And we just really loved that we could walk to the MTR (and from there, walk to several places in an air-conditioned environment) and that restaurants that are familiar were nearby. Most of the shopping we did were also around the area (Nathan and Kimberley Road).

Hotel Benito did not offer any meals with its rates, but I guess it didn't want to compete with the restaurants near it. Less than 5 minutes from it are the noodle houses and barbecue shops and dessert cafes at Carnarvon Road... and just across it is Hoixe Cake Shop (Hong Kong's version of Bread Talk) which offered soooo many great things, we practically lived there too.

I would really highly recommend Hotel Benito to others looking for a nicer place to stay in Hong Kong and would definitely book rooms there again should we return.

What to Put in Party Loot Bags

Most parents who are planning their child's party will gravitate towards candy to include in the loot bags they are giving away. Here are some intentional suggestions and food for thought:

1) You don't have to put food there. This way, you're sure nothing gets spoiled by a guest who doesn't eat that food item, or has a Mom who disapproves of that food item.

You can put puzzles instead, or sticker books. You can put crayons, bubbles, glow sticks, even mini books. You can put erasers, pens, a small stuffed toy. A lot will depend on your budget and theme but pretty much any little thing a child can appreciate (and a child is usually easily pleased).

2) If you must include food, choose healthier alternatives.

Commercial cupcakes, crackers or wafers will be nice. Welch's fruit gummies instead of the usual gummy worms. A muesli bar or honey sticks or a small pack of nuts (just forewarn parents that allergenic products are in the bag so they will check for sure).

3) If you want to give away sweets, think local.

Chocnut will forever delight people. Also those pinipig bars sold at bus stations. Or ampaw/pop rice (plus, kids don't see much of these anymore... they are sold at wet marketplaces still). Make your own sugar lumps or candies from bao/amis which is pure sugarcane goodness. Give yema or pastillas or polvoron instead. This way, you know what ingredients were used rather than buying the more affordable but often dubious China-made stuff sold in Divi.

4) If you must give sweets, think chocolates instead of candies.

Chocolates, though sweet, are not as acidic as hard candies and are still kinder to teeth. Buy chocolate crisp balls or chocolate eggs in bulk and just repackage to give away. Give small tubs of bread sticks with chocolate or strawberry dipping, or a chocolate lollipop. Plus, 3 pieces of chocolate kisses still say a lot more than a slew of cheapo candies (that may or may not raise manufacturing issues).

5) Never put gum in there.

Some parents do not check and not all children will know it's gum and not supposed to be swallowed.

6) Don't go overboard.

Sure, we all like freebies and kids will always love free candies and sweets. But one or two (or three) IS enough. You did not invite kids to your party to give them cavities nor did you attend a party and gave gifts to be given diabetes in turn. Control your desire to please, conform and/or be perceived as well-off or generous or cool. This will save you money, which you can channel on more important aspects of the party (like the entertainment).

7) Don't give away anything you won't give your child.

If you're not letting your child play with plastic toys with uneven edges or let him eat candies with ingredients you cannot pronounce, then don't give any like those away. If you're an intentional parent, chances are, your invited friends are the same.

8) Feel free to do away with a loot bag, especially if there's already a cool giveaway.

Save money and energy, just give something more substantial (but not necessarily more costly) as a token of your appreciation for your guests having come... instead of having a souvenir and a loot bag. If they're taking home a book or a stool or a tumbler, they aren't likely to forget your party anyway. It may even save their parents a meltdown from the over-stimulating party because there will be nothing else that would have to be opened/eaten/played with in the carride home.

9) Give away intentional stuff.

DIY finger puppets will get your child guest (and hopefully their parent) using their imagination. Busy bags will be appreciated by parents and little books will be used a lot longer. A child can also never have enough stickers or crayons.

It's summer abroad and the perfect time for repairs.

Adding a verandah to your house? Cement is sure to dry faster! Paint will dry faster too.

In a location of drastic winters? Time to do repairs on the roof, check your fireplace inserts, clean up chimneys and check (or replace) heaters

Located in areas known for terrible storms? Check your storm shutters, revisit your cellars and panic rooms.

This is also a good time to take stock of your furniture and appliances. Anything you haven't used for the past two years, consider selling (to maybe would-be college students), giving away or throwing away. And then make the repairs and refurbishing in your home to give it a fresher, uncluttered feeling.

Make lemons out of the lemonade that is intense heat. Take advantage of the kids being home as there will be extra hands to do the work.

LATCH's Get It Off Your Chest Campaign

If you're undecided about going to the All About Baby Fair for fear of going into debt from all the possible purchases you may end up doing (especially if you have a girl and see all the cute, fab outfits being sold there) then I have a wonderful solution for you.

LATCH will kick off their "Get it Off Your Chest" campaign at the fair. One part of the campaign is an exhibit of inspiring moms and their take on breastfeeding. Another is a backdrop to be provided for people (men, women, children alike!) who will pose with their answers to LATCH's breastfeeding-related questions. The shy, on the other hand, will be provided with Post-Its to post on a board for their answers. The pictures will then later be used by LATCH to come up with a hopefully inspiring photoslide on breastfeeding.

So, the solution is simple: hang out at our booth! Answer our questions and ask us about breastfeeding! :) You will also meet a lot of phenomenal women there.

Batangus Grill Restaurant: Affordable Steak Goodness

Suddenly, I am craving steaks and ribs. Hubs said the reviews on Batangus grill, a restaurant we often pass on the way home from my son's school, is generally great. And since my father hails from Batangas, I loved the play on the name and we checked the place out.

It has the feel of a slightly expensive beerhouse minus the smoke and noise. The staff were friendly and warm and didn't mind that we came bringing McDo fried chicken for our son.

We didn't want to be greedy so we just ordered their Barako Steak and Crispy Ribsi (?) Spicy Fried Rice. The spicy rice isn't that spicy at all and really very nice. The Ribsi wasn't that crispy but it tasted like the street food 'sebo' without the greasy threat of a heart attack.

Batangus served us steak that was just delicious. We had ours well done and it was still really tender, really tasty, really juicy. Hubs said it didn't need the so-so gravy but I loved the gravy with the mashed potatoes.

Hubby, the meat-eater, was really super satisfied with our meal.

We ordered a hamburger to go. It was huge and heavy and smelled so nice. It also came with fries. Unfortunately, my hubby said he thinks it's just okay and had issues with the bun. I liked it, however, which is saying something since I don't generally eat burgers.

One thing we agreed on is that it's so wonderful to have eaten all that beef without having grease on our lips. We are definitely going back there again (and again)!

Fried Chicken Made Interesting by Dalandan

Make your fried chicken more interesting by adding some dalandan concentrate to it before serving.

We just use our preferred breading (the generic ones from groceries in white packets) and fry the chicken. Before serving, we just put some Willybee's Dalandan & Honey concentrate in a tub, put the chicken pieces there, cover and shake.

This is what you'll get and it can be quite addicting!

Rovelli Maxiball Chocolates from Singapore

Filipinos, when they go to Singapore, know that they can get a lot of different kinds of chocolates at Mustafa... and at lower rates too.

This was bought for us by one of hubs' colleagues and it only cost 14 Sing dollars (less than P500). I was able to fill four Selecta family pack tubs with these, so that's a lot of chocolate balls for less than P500.

What I liked about it? You can taste the cacao so it's sure to do the trick if you're looking for a true chocolate fix. It's a lot like Ferrero Rocher inside but instead of chopped hazelnuts, you get what seems to be crisped rice balls. It easily melts though.

Try it... and am sure you'd love it!

Estrel's Caramel Cake

Estrel's Caramel Cake is one of those things that's sure to make you put your ipod touch 32g aside, no matter how wonderful the song you're listening to because Estrel's caramel cakes command one's full attention. Why? Because its cakes are not meant to last. Best eaten upon date of purchase, it expires the following day.

Estrel's specializes in made-to-order cakes but have also taken to baking a few round cakes for walk-in patrons. The round cakes cost P600 each. a double layer of chiffon with caramel filling and icing, topped with buttercream flowers.

Estrel's caramel cakes are not too sweet which makes for easy eating. It's appeal is in the old-fashioned recipe (born: 1946), unpretentiously classy design and lack of preservatives.

Truth be told, however, much as I enjoyed estrel's, I prefer Hizon's caramel cakes more (with its light yellow caramel icing, really soft cake, and slightly more hint of lemon zest) but Hizon's don't really put icing flowers on their caramel cakes.

Arugaan Day Care Moved to PIA

Arugaan Day Care used to be in Marikina but it has recently moved to a really big complex at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) at Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.

Sometimes, there are really good products out there that just don't take off because of poor marketing. And while an online marketing degree is sure to help anyone running a business, it would also be good to tap onto present resources that are cheap and risk-free.

Take for example selling things online. Facebook will allow you to put up albums of your wares. Ask your friends' permission to tag them in some of the pictures because they may have friends who may be interested in your products. Or... ask them to promote you in their walls outright.

If your products are for kids, use kiddie doodles in the brochures or fold the flyers up into pinwheels.
If you want to create buzz, get blogger friends to offer your product as prize to their readers.

I am sure an online marketing degree will get you thinking up more ways to market your product better at minimum cost. But don't forget to make do with what you already have since it also usually results in strategies that are more inspired.

If the electronic toys with vtech batteries are not amusing your tot for hours on end, and you need some quiet time to do the chores or have your ME time but do not really want to invest in a multitude of toys (after all, there are no guarantees that they're going to be played with anyway), then invoke the power of a child's imagination and use your regular household items.

Try a box of an old appliance or your most recent groceries. Try old pots and pans and maybe some ladles too. Try newspapers. Try a malong and see them tunnel in and out of this one, or prop it up with chairs as a makeshift tent.

If you can part with it, maybe even lend the flashlight and have them shadowplay with a light-colored blanket.

You can also just let them free on chairs of different heights.

Just use your imagination so they will also use theirs. And your pocketbook will remain intact.

My niece is cute and well, sellers at the bazaar were trying to capitalize on her cuteness by wooing her with their wares. Unfortunately, the bows they were telling her looked perfect on her cost P340 each! And she had two on them on her head!

We told her we'd run it by her Mom first... then I took her aside and told her to try my friend's bows and ribbons instead. I figured, if I was going to buy something so expensive for my niece, might as well help out my friend (who was doing the bazaar thing for the first time that time).

Unfortunately for the Mommy Diaries bazaar, it was super rainy today that the flow of possible shoppers was really affected. Even food vendors had to be moved indoors because the area outside got flooded and no one ever ventured out to buy their wares.

But, if you're a serious Mom shopper, I'd say it's a great bazaar to go to. Not only are the usual baby, maternity, nursing and feeding stuff being sold there but wonderful things like couture bags, funky clothes, accessories and makeup too.

Daddies need not fear because there are also sellers of bag organizers, bags and even vitamins and supplements (maybe even some top creatine supplements you're looking for).

And I was super happy taste testing all those cookies! Haha.

If you're coming tomorrow, and you have a girl (3 months to 6 years old) or looking for something to give a girl in that age range, do visit these two booths:

Maybe you don't really need hot tub covers especially since you're not likely to leave a hot tub unattended, but maybe you also ought to think again.

Same way that you should reconsider reusing old shampoo and mineral water bottles as containers of potentially harmful substances like dishwashing liquid, ironing aids and solutions for cleaning jewelry and other stuff.

The thing is, we always mean well. And we always assume we're vigilant enough. Sometimes, however, just a ringing phone can distract us enough from our curious kiddos and can result in an emergency hospital visit.

So, those heavy medical or law books should nowhere be on a high shelf where they can fall and seriously harm your child. Trust me, better risk having your kid have fun ripping it apart, than it making a bad landing on your kid's head or chest.

If, when you go number Two, you have to strain so hard sometimes that you feel like you're erecting metal buildings single-handedly... then maybe slight changes in your diet should be your top priority.

And I am thrilled to share that Soyami is also selling bread sticks now and that these help move things along very well. I have only tried the basil-flavored (other flavors include garlic and chili). I won't say it's delicious because it is rather bland but you do get to taste the soya, and the bread sticks are crunchy. More like, they're easy to eat and you can probably finish off one package if you'll allow yourself. They feel light. Certainly a healthier something for parties and pastas.

Do try Soyami Soya Styx if you want to stay clear off chips but also want to enjoy soya in other ways. It's soya goodness in bread form!

I have only begun my awareness of Steiner education. My son is enrolled in the summer parent-child program that meets every Monday even though he is already 3.5 years old. This is so because I wanted to transition him into attending a class and because I want to learn first. I want to see the value of embracing Waldorf/Steiner principles.

Suffice it to say that I am hooked and sold on the ideas, so far. And my son has absolutely fluorished and our relationship enriched by being forced to learn routines and gentleness together.

I have even made my own teeny, tiny doll already! :)

A Safety Reminder

Last week, a topic of conversation in my ygroups was someone's neighbor who accidentally dragged her child with their car. It was a classic accident involving an SUV's blind spot. A friend of mine once ran over his child's foot because of the same issue.

No matter how careful we are, accidents will happen. Still, that is no reason to be less vigilant about safety and security.

Have protocols in place at home, one that you implement strictly. Install mirrors and lighting where necessary or helpful. Invest in ATV Lights if you need them. Install gates, alarms, etc. and brief your household regularly about different kinds of hazards.

Once keeping safe is a habit, it will be easy.

Conserve Water, Finish It Up

Helping the planet can be so easy and yet, so hard.

Take for example water. Drinking water. We all take it for granted. After all, we can easily get a jug of it for only P25-40. And yet, none of us think to take water from our homes to bring with us when we go out, opting instead to buy bottled water which costs between P10-30 each.

And when we're out dining, we like having our glasses filled with water and ice... but do not finish it up. Now, how about trying to make it a habit of only asking for water you can drink, and finishing the drink given you? You waste double the amount of water if you don't. Plus, aside from maybe the inconvenience of having to pee (which you can do something about by having a wee break before you go), water won't harm you. It will keep you hydrated, rid you of toxins, and be great for your skin. It may even help you feel full a lot longer.

All restaurants should also make it a habit of using smaller/leaner glasses for water. We can also employ that trick at home, just so we won't be pouring out more than we can consume. And believe me, that will already go a long way!

iPad 2 Available in the Country

iPad version 2 is now available in the country. I even know someone selling them at slightly cheaper rates, both the wifi and 3G versions. And I know many are scrambling to buy.

One complaint about it is the resolution of the camera. Then again, you really wouldn't use a big thing like it for taking pictures right? But ask yourself first if you really need one before joining the bandwagon. It's yet another gadget that can be stolen from you, which will also be fast rendered obsolete as they come up with updated models and competetive alternatives, and another reason to stop interacting with people.

I am not saying it's not a cool something that can prove useful. It even has apps for babies and kids now. But few who own one really NEED it. For the price of P41k (for the 3G one), you can already pay for a shcool year's tuition, go on a trip abroad or start your own business. So, think about it.

If you also need better pictures, invest in a good digicam instead. If you need music to help relax you, buy ipod touch instead. If you need to do a lot of computing on the road, maybe a notebook is the wiser purchase.

But yes, the reviews on the iPad 2 are really good so it is a gadget that seems worth the price.

Reminder Boards

Since we all have to wait awhile for home automation to be the norm, we would have to do with reminder pads and boards for a longer while.

A pad, however, is easier to misplace. If you have kids, they are also more likely to play with it, hide it, or pile their toys on top of it. This is where reminder boards have an advantage. Attached safely on a high-traffic wall or surface (like your fridge door), with a pen attached to it with a string, you can now easily jot things that need to be bought and done. Chores can easily be ticked off and the family schedule easily monitored.

You can also opt to use a whiteboard or a glass surface set in frames, and then just use whiteboard markers. If you have older kids, you can also freely use colored ones without fear of having an incomplete set for all your categories.

Barbara's Restaurant - Review on Buffet

Every Tuesdays to Fridays, Barbara's Restaurant in Intramuros offers a dinner buffet for P500, inclusive of a cultural show by the Folklorico Dance Troupe. The buffet was offered in Metrodeal at half-price so I bought two vouchers and took my hubby on a date.

The buffet featured soup (tinola), rice, fish (pescado al ajillo), chicken, beef (lengua), noodles (pancit sotanghon), salad (a DIY thing featuring chopped onions, tomatoes, greens and shrimp paste) and desserts (banana & sesame seeds, and guinumis). That was it.

But everything on the menu, we really, really loved. I especially feasted on the pescado al ajillo. And we just loved the perfectly cooked banana fritters in sesame seeds (forget about creatine products, fish and banana will help build muscle! hehe). The ambience of their restaurant was also very romantic. Plus, patriotically, I love that the dinner buffet allows the Folklorico dancers (mostly students from PLM) a venue to perfect their craft while also showcasing our wonderful heritage to foreigners (because half of the guests there that night with us were, or at least, balikbayans).

So, next time another deal is offered by a Groupon site, take advantage of it. Or just really treat your loved ones or clients there for good food and entertainment. Sometimes, you don't need the number of choices offered in other buffets, just really well-prepared food. And Barbara's will not disappoint!!! (and no, I am not biased just because they catered our wedding)

Don't Get Dehydrated

The heat is on and a lot of people seems to be coming down with colds, headaches and other maladies, some of which may be attributed to dehydration. Some may not even invoke the wonders of pink magic because everybody's just sweating profusely even while standing and doing nothing.

So, make sure you hydrate enough. If you can, add flavor to your water by sprinkling some calamansi, lemon or lime into it. But try to avoid too much fruit juice, unless it's buko juice. The sugar won't do you any good.

If you're not a water drinker, eat more fruits and vegetables instead.

And... avoid coffee and tea, as these are diuretics. If you must drink any, remember to drink two times the equivalent amount of water to replenish your fluids. Oh, and boiling some ginger and drinking the tea is actually refreshing because the heat of the ginger will cool you off.

Same thing goes with spicy food. :)

I had the pleasure to see Rosemont Gardens personally after our weekend from Canyon Cove. Rosemont Gardens is perfect for small weddings, cocktail parties, other small gatherings or a weekend party with friends/getaway with family. The house has three bedrooms and three toilets and baths. The kitchen is fully equipped for use.

The property is conveniently located along General Aguinaldo Highway so it's also real easy to have things delivered or for quick trips to your usual Tagaytay haunts. And because it's Tagaytay, don't be surprised to be enveloped by fog when you're in the veranda when dusk sets or it's raining.

The place is also perfect for pre-nuptial or other kinds of photoshoots. One other thing it's perfect for is a private date or that venue for a marriage proposal.

Rosemont Gardens is more of a beautiful, luxurious home than a hotel. And they do offer air-conditioning but you might not need it, if you're lucky.

Bond with your baby! Under the guidance of experienced Waldorf teacher Josie Sanchez, you will do meaningful activities with your child, and bond in a loving, nourishing way! This program is for young children to learn to play and interact with each other, with the security of having one of their parents with them in the room.

Let your child discover the magic of color through wet on wet painting. This allows young children an experience of color, not form. The basis of creating wonderful artworks is being able to live in and feel the colors, especially for very young children.

Cooking (May 2 to 6 Morning OR May 16 to 20 Afternoon)
Nourish your child for a healthy mind and body. Your child will learn to make soup, pasta, sandwiches and dessert, and some Filipino delicacies too!
Hand crafts - (May 2 to 6 Afternoon OR May 16 to 20 Morning)
“Nimble fingers, nimble minds” – Children, with the gentle guidance of the teachers, will do age-appropriate handwork activities such as basics of sewing, weaving, beading, and finger knitting. This will be done in a home-like working atmosphere, where children are free to work according to their own abilities and ideas to practice manual dexterity, perseverance and creativity. The objective is not to produce finished products, but rather for the child to experience the activities in the atmosphere of creative freedom.

Parent-child sessions come with a snack for both parent and child. Half-day sessions (day care program) come with one snack and lunch while whole-day sessions come with two snacks and lunch. All healthy, all organic :)

Make Believe Productions: Classes on Fashion, Storytelling, Theater and Many More

One of the booths that appealed to us at the Children's Workshop Expo 2011 last Sunday was the Make Believe Productions booth. There was a shadow theater going on and they were offering face painting so they were really drawing kids and parents to their booth.

Make Believe Productions is offering classes on acting and directing, animation, dance, shadow theater, fashion arts and crafts and storytelling through digital photography.

Canyon Cove Residential Beach Resort in Nasugbu, Batangas - A Review

It's definitely getting harder and harder to enjoy a beach that's clean, if you're living in Manila, without having to fly to it or drive a little farther in the nearby provinces of Cavite and Batangas, and Pangasinan and Zambales.

Canyon Cove in Nasugbu, Batangas offers a beach that's clean with sand great for playing in, and a pool area with a magnificent view. I just don't know though if it's La Nina or that area is just really cold... but gosh, was it cold when we were there. The pool water was cold and the buffeting winds were also cold. The beach water was cold too but it's less windy there. The sunset was very beautiful.

The main Canyon Cove hotel offers a great view of the water, rays of the sun to wake you up, and the sunset to make you feel all kinds of sentimental. Hubs said that he read a lot of bad reviews for this resort so our expectations weren't high. But all in all, we also found the resort good in terms of the beach/pool offering and its relative proximity to Manila (because I think Zambales, Bataan and those areas are still farther, and I could be wrong). Yes, we found the rates a little steep, but we were able to get a 20% discount.

Plus, the Superior Unit, the smallest room at 40 sq. m. is a big room.

but our bathtub's paint was peeling so drawing a bath was out of the question

Our aircon wasn't busted but it wasn't that cold either. We had to turn the thermostat (the dial of which was broken) to the coolest temp and keep it at that. We were comfortably cold... one of our friends had to call to have their aircon fixed though because it was just not getting cold in their room.

They do offer beach towels and there are enough towels in the room so you need not bring any. They also provide enough shampoo, shower gel and soap for a weekend stay. No toothbrush/toothpaste though.

I think I also should mention that I was expecting rhinitis from my boys, who are very sensitive to dust, because I wasn't sure just how well they clean the rooms. Plus, the pillows on the bay window bed were dusty. However, we all slept like a baby in the main bed, with no sneezing fits even after we got home.

There are two elevators servicing the main hotel. What I also liked about the layout of the hotel rooms is that all rooms are to the right of one long corridor. Then, there are wide gaps leading to two rooms/doors facing each other, affording extra privacy to room occupants from other guests who may be walking the length of the corridor. Plus, the doors, when opened, offer a view of the closet so unless people will be naked at the door, it shouldn't be an issue if both doors open at the same time.

There's a wifi area near the front desk of the lobby.

We didn't really explore Canyon Cove's facilities nor did we dine there. Our discounted room rate also didn't come with breakfast so we just ate the sandwiches we had with us for breakfast. We had lunch at Kainan sa Dalampasigan before checking in, and ate at Mang Inasal (at the town proper, around 10-15 minutes away) for dinner and lunch the next day. Canyon Cove was offering P600/head buffet but since we weren't sure of the food, we found it steep especially since our friends had nannies and drivers to feed too.

There is a general impression that the resort could be greater if its staff were more properly trained and if it paid attention to the fine details. Better management perhaps? Plus, our friends said that the staff didn't seem busy, when there were so many guests, which gave the impression that the resort was overstaffed... because the staff were just standing together in groups.

They also failed to get our Ving cards from us upon checkout and I totally forgot to surrender them.

Would we return? Sure, if we can get discounts again. I think it's a nice getaway for couples too... and a nice prenuptial photo opp location.

Do I highly recommend the place? Not really... but I also am not ranting about Canyon Cove. Our experience there was good.

Facebook has decided to upgrade and revamp its messaging system. Not only do you get messages, you can also get e-mails. And now, it's offering every one of its registered members to update their status and send messages/e-mails within their Facebook network using their cellphones without having to use a third-party provider.

You will see the prompt to edit your preferences when you log in again. I also just tested it using my Sun Cellular network and it works. Micro-blogging at your fingertips indeed!

I guess fathers will be using this one for birth announcements from now on... My husband used Twitter (which was tied to his Facebook account) when I gave birth last November.

Be Wary of Groupon Deals

I get e-mail alerts from different Groupon sites but have only purchased two: one for a dinner date with hubs at Barbara's (which we have yet to enjoy) and one for massage (somewhere in Makati). I feel both are good deals. I'm not sure if these sites are offering phone alerts like SharisBerries Twitter is doing for their promo codes but since a lot of people can access their mails through their phones, I guess these deals are now really that accessible.

And tempting.

However, it seems some Groupon sites are actually being deceitful and misleading. They say you're getting a 50% discount when they're really offering the deal at its original price. Or, it's really a 50% discount if you're getting the service fom a higher-end provider, but the deal's actual original price from the adverising company is way lower. And, in the case of some, travel agencies are giving the same deals or restaurants are actually just throwing in free iced tea :)

So, before you buy... contact the company first or do some research first as to how much the goods really cost. See if you're really going to save money on it before committing your pockets to it. There could be better deals out there.

Storytelling Competition

Kainan sa Dalampasigan - Nasugbu, Batangas

Kainan sa Dalampasigan was a beautiful way to start our weekend in Nasugbu, Batangas. It was my first time in Nasugbu and travelling in a caravan with kids, with all our stops and starts, added to the exhaustion of the road trip... even if I wasn't the one driving. Kainan sa Dalampasigan provided not just a gastronomic feast but also refreshed our other senses as it was a lovely stop before we went on to Canyon Cove.

My 3-year old son said it best: Kainan sa Dalampasigan was a forest for the eating. It really felt like you were transported in a forest where you can expect elves and fairies. The drive to the parking area already provides ambience with its hanging vines (so sorry, no pics). The restaurant is open, with high ceilings and windows and plants. It's not luxurious in modern standards but more relaxing, rustic, and rejuvenating.

The food was your typical Batangas fare but all were good to great. And the servings were huge! Famished, we were trying to order combo platters (P480 each with baked mussels, shrimps, fish and the tenderest lechon kawali, I think, and mango salad) and four bulalo (bone marrow soup) bowls but the waitress attending to us was good enough to tell us to order so much first and see... because the servings were really huge! Well, I guess if I had my way with the platter, I could eat it all up because everything in it were cooked right and tasted great.

Even the rice (wrapped in banana leaves) servings were big!

I believe the dishes in Kainan sa Dalampasigan are made from the freshest of ingredients and look, they're really very affordable!

none of us tried the halo-halo but we had 3 lyaneras of leche flan, which could have used a little dayap but wasn't really sickening sweet either

Now, the staff were friendly but it also seemed that they weren't used to having guests, haha. Service wasn't slow but wasn't very prompt either. We were kidding about how they seemed surprised even that people were there.

One other great thing about Kainan sa Dalampasigan was the space... which allowed our kiddos to burn off the energy curbed by being cooped up in cars all morning. They just ran and ran and ran around.

But oh, we'd really eat here again if only for the great food and ambience... and mind you, I grew up in Batangas fare and really appreciated how their dishes tasted authentic (well, different towns in Batangas also cook the same dishes differently) and well.

If only Kainan sa Dalampasigan wasn't so far! Then again, if you're in Nasugbu, this is the only seafood place the locals will direct you to. It also seemed like the only one offering 'fine dining' in the area.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it for formal affairs like weddings (but for a typical Batanggenyo, a reception there would already be a grand affair for sure) but it can be great enough for pre-nuptial or some other photoshoot.

It's amazing what you can do with basically a concrete shed and iron roof and still invoke an atmosphere that makes 'oasis' come to mind.

Spend Summer in the Mountains

No need to be able to afford real expensive mountainside resorts like the Eden one in Davao. You just have to be willing to be adventurous and rough it up a little bit. Go mountain climbing with your family and bond under the stars in the cool night air. You don't even have to join open climbs, you can do it on your own. Of course, I am recommending minor climbs like Daguldul or Gulugod Baboy or Batulao (where the views are breathtaking and only about two hours of slow ascent).

The Metropolitan Mountaineering Society is a great resource for itineraries. You won't need Black Diamond Z-Poles for minor climbs but you still have to prepare and have the right gear (sturdy backpack) and shoes. You should also do your research about the area and mind advisories and local customs in deference to people living there.

Good luck. The beaches will be teeming with people so head to the mountains instead for the rest and relaxation you need.
